At Oak Tree Day Nursery and Preschool, August 2024 was a momentous month. The nursery received an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted rating, a recognition of their unwavering dedication to providing exceptional care and education for the children in their care. We had the pleasure of sitting down with Rebecca Rowland, the Nursery Manager, to reflect on the achievement and discover the heart behind Oak Tree’s success.
How did you feel when you received ‘Outstanding?’
When I took over in August 2022, we were at a turning point. The previous manager had left, and it was a challenging time, but I had complete faith in the potential of Oak Tree. This place has always had something special. A unique spark that I knew we could reignite. I was excited to step into the role of Nursery Manager and bring my vision to life. When I made Donna my deputy, everything just clicked. We had a shared passion and a common goal, to create a curriculum that went beyond the guidelines.
It had to come from the heart, reflecting not only our values but also our community and the world around us. Receiving the Outstanding rating was the validation of everything we’d worked for. It was more than just an achievement, it was the culmination of our belief in this nursery’s magic.
Children thrive at this well-developed, exciting nursery. They feel safe and secure. Practitioners provide an inspirational environment that focuses on the children.

One of the things we’re incredibly passionate about is teaching the children to care for the environment. We even sponsor the lane beside the nursery, and we involve the children in looking after it. It’s all about bringing the outside in, fostering a big family feel, and making every day an adventure. When we got the Outstanding rating, we were beyond excited. For me, it was the best moment in my career.
What do you believe contributed most to receiving this positive rating?
We stayed true to who we are. We simply did what we always do, but at the highest level. The passion of our team truly shone through. We were excited to show Ofsted what we do every day, and I think that authenticity is what made the difference.
Can you highlight some of the strengths noted in the Ofsted report?
Ofsted recognised our leadership as outstanding, which meant a lot, especially as Donna and I are both relatively new to our roles. To receive that feedback on our first Ofsted inspection together was an incredible sense of achievement. They also highlighted our exceptional arrangements for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This is something we prioritise, ensuring that every child, no matter their needs, has access to the same opportunities.
Leadership is outstanding, and the team has a great vision for the nursery. Practitioners ensure that children’s learning occurs in every activity.

What also stood out was how safe, secure, and happy the children feel here. After the challenges of COVID-19, rebuilding those bonds and relationships has been a huge focus for us. The fact that children arrive happy, confident, and ready to dive into their day speaks volumes about the connections we’ve rebuilt.
How do you plan to maintain and build on this positive rating?
We’re not resting on our laurels. We have so many exciting ideas in the pipeline. Our eco-curriculum is expanding, and we’re introducing a forest school programme, which is going to be a fantastic new addition. We’re also looking at ways to enhance our SEND provision even further. One idea is to create a dedicated SEND area in our garden.
Children arrive happily and confidently, joining purposeful play. The team provides a broad curriculum based on meticulous assessment

What does this rating mean for the nursery and parents?
It means the world to the entire Oak Tree family! Our third-in-charge literally screamed when we found out, and the whole team was jumping up and down with excitement. We’ve always known we do our best, but getting that Outstanding rating confirmed it in the most official way possible. It’s such a boost for the team, and it’s still giving everyone a real spring in their step.
“Achieving ‘Outstanding’ is beyond exciting for us! It reaffirms the hard work and commitment we put in daily for the children and families in our care. I’m so proud!”
Donna Saunders / deputy manager
How can parents and the community get involved in celebrating this achievement?
We want to share this milestone with everyone! We’re planning a special celebration day, which will include a circus-themed open day with fun activities like arts and crafts, hoopla, and a photo booth. It’ll be a great way for parents, children, and the wider community to come together and celebrate what we’ve achieved. And of course, we’re taking the team out soon to celebrate too!
This Outstanding rating is a testament to the passion, dedication, and vision that drives Oak Tree Day Nursery and Preschool. As Rebecca and her team look ahead, their focus remains firmly on nurturing each child’s development and continuing to provide the best possible start in life. Here’s to many more outstanding years!
